Britney Spears’ Father Invalidates Obama’s Superdelegate Baby Car Wash | Poetry At The Blue Dragon in Albuquerque, New Mexico

So Brooke and I went to the newly-reopened Blue Dragon last night for their [re]inaugural poetry reading. I understand on very good authority that the Blue Dragon was a great venue and a wonderful home for performers of all kinds in this city. I really like the place. It’s a little place, very charming on the outside, and on the inside, where the performances happen, is a great, great room. Great stage positioning and sound. Mr. Ken Gurney hosted a two-hour poetry open mic and I heard a lot of very good work from quite a number of new faces. I’d say at the height of attendance throughout the night there were close to 20 people there. In the first hour, I read “Quite Contrary” (my IWPS one-minute poem, the one about answering the random call at the payhone? have you heard me do it?) and  ”Maiden Forms“, and, in the second hour, I read “Paramecium” and then I debuted a new poem, a parody/commentary on the deluge of new drug/pharmaceutical commercials called ”Maybe It’s Time“. The crowd, which seemed predominantly “non-slam” in its bent (I heard one woman remark after someone brought up poetry slams that “they have medications for that”), seemed to like my work. I can’t wait for the next poetry event due at the Dragon: the poetry slam. I think it’s going to be very cool.

Britney Spears Gives Congressman Ike Skelton A Milf Bronsky; WWE Superstar John Cena Puts Gen. David Petraeus Up In The F5

I hope that I’m getting this word out with enough time for some of you to show up for this, but there is going to be a great poetry show happening at the reading this Wednesday night. Amazing poet Talaam Acey will be giving us a powerhouse feature set of poetry that night, and if you’re in the area on Wednesday night, and you’re looking for something cool to do, then this is where you need to be! Here is a little bit about Talaam: He may be the hardest working spoken word artist of his generation. He’s published a novel, a comprehensive collection of poems, an award winning memoir and 9 spoken word CDs. Taalam has been a full time traveling poet since 1999. Tens of thousands of people own his work and many, many more have seen his performances. Acey performs regularly in more than 50 cities in the US and abroad. On average, he is on a plane once every 3.5 days. That’s 100 flights per year to promote spoken word. So, what I’m saying is, please come. You will not regret it. It’s only a couple of bucks, less than half the price of a national brand pack of cigarettes, less than the cost of one day pass on the bus – be there or be square!

In other news, I watched MTV’s Video Music Awards show* the other night with some friends. Here are some notes that I took:

1. If rhythm-and-blues and dance-oriented music have degenerated to the point where the lip-synching morons I saw are being called “artists”, then I fear for the future of music. I heard a lot of stuff onstage, but I didn’t hear many songs, or music. That much I do know.

2. I read a bunch of crap online today about how Britney Spears did not “look good’ on stage and that she had a “mushy tummy”. Wrong! While it’s true that Britney Spears is irrelevant to actual music, to say that she didn’t look good? I liked her little belly showing up, but then again, I’m not brainwashed into thinking that the stick figures who grace fashion magazine covers are realistic depictions of actual human female beauty.

3. I have a huge, pointless and futile celebrity crush on Sarah Silverman. And her microphone time right after Britney’s performance was the best moment of an otherwise lackluster funeral for music.

In other news, if you’re not a comic books reader, fan, or if you’ve never been one, you might not know who that is in the picture at the top of this post. It’s Iron Man. He’s coming to theaters next summer, and he’s awesome. You need to check out this trailer. ASAP.

Welcome to The University of Morpheus | A Community of Learning & Inspiration: We Encourage Bravery in Thought and Curiosity at Heart. Student Population? Untold.

I had a dream this morning that I was walking somewhere on some college campus (The University of Morpheus?) and I saw this piece of outdoor guerilla theater where these college boys and girls were naked and posing as mannequins frozen in the middle of various dance steps. At one point, I stood next a girl and began to mimic her pantomime and she smiled at me and she and I began to do a sort of pantomime routine together. She would do one sort of serious of poses, and I would follow suit. Without saying a word. Only smiling at each other at the end of each successful coordination of moves.

When we were done, she and a couple of the other people in the troupe asked me to join them on their tour of various Greek fraternity and sorority houses.

If anyone has any Earthly idea what a dream like this can mean, please let me know.

The girls in the dream were naked but painted as though they had bikinis on, by the way.

Which was nice.
