Okay, so it’s not the late morning, it’s the early afternoon, but I had a late night. Sorry. As I mentioned in my previous post, I finally got a response by email from Christy Everson. Here’s the email that I sent to her:

Dear Christy,

My name is Rich Boucher and I’m a poet and patriotic American from the state of Delaware.
I was just reading a news article online at wwww.michaelmoore.com regarding a recent incident
where a young patriot named Rain Burroughs was removed from a 4th of July celebration
at Dogwood Dell area of Byrd Park by Richmond Police simply because she was carrying
a banner which conveyed the depth of her feelings about Vice President Dick Cheney
and, in reference to him, House Resolution 333.

According to the article, which appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, in reference to
Rain Burroughs’ protected political speech, you were quoted as saying, “Obviously, you don’t
want that kind of disruption in the middle of a performance at that location”.

I have some questions for you about what you said, and also about what happened to Rain
Burroughs and her 7-year-old daughter.

1. Why is it “obvious” that political expression would be unwanted at a 4th of July celebration?
Wouldn’t a 4th of July celebration be the most appropriate place of all to celebrate
one’s First Amendment right to openly criticize our government?

2. Who is the “you” in this sentence, “Obviously, you don’t
want that kind of disruption in the middle of a performance at that location”?
Can you actually mean to speak for everyone who comes to a public event?
How would you be able to know such a thing? Do you, as a public official,
believe in and support the First Amendment right to openly criticize our government?

3. Does it make any sense at all to throw a young woman and her 7-year-old daughter
into a police cruiser and keep them away from a 4th of July celebration simply
because they wanted to share their feelings about the current administration’s
policies?

4. You said that you were “unsure” of who called the police to ask for Rain Burroughs’
removal – does this mean it was an anonymous phone call? If it was not an
anonymous phone call, what is the name of the individual who called the police
and asked for Rain Burroughs’ removal from the park?

I know that you are very busy, and I want to thank you, in advance,
for your prompt reply.

Yours sincerely,

Rich Boucher
poet and patriot

And now, here is her email response to me:
Mr. Boucher,

Ms. Rain’s protest created a disturbance during the performance, which is why the police were called. To me it seems obvious that if this had happened in a concert hall, the response would have been the same. I consider her behavior rude not only to the audience who were there to enjoy the evening, but also to the performers. The appropriate place for her to protest would have been outside the amphitheater, where it is my understanding that she was allowed to continue her protests.

Thank you for your concerns for our First Amendment rights.

Sincerely,

Christy Everson

So, she emailed me in response, but she really didn’t answer my questions. And Christy, Rain Burroughs’ protest didn’t happen in a concert hall, so that’s a weird comparison to be making. And who in the hell is Christy Everson to be making the determination as to where it would be “appropriate” to protest? She basically ignores questions 2-4 from my email. This woman just reeks of condescension (“I consider her behavior rude”, “Thank you for your concerns for our First Amendment rights”)! And I do not accept the concert hall comparison – it just doesn’t wash. And there is no “inappropriate” place to engage in political speech when we are in the middle of a fucked-up, badly-conceived quagmire of a war!

So, please help. Drop her an email. Or give her a call.

Let’s turn the heat up.

Be on the lookout later this morning for a follow-up post on the email I sent to Christy Everson, the PR specialist who had such a brilliant “explanation” for the Virginia police detaining a young woman and her 7-year- old daughter for engaging in a political protest at a 4th ofJuly celebration. She emailed me back, but she didn’t do herself any favors with the way she worded her response.

Poem Draft: The Light of Awakening

as my eyes collect the light of a.m. awakening
slowly, with a coffee cup brewing
the last thing I was dreaming of
fights to not dissolve away

it was you
sweet girl
it was you
with a tease
and a fuschia bikini
and the words
“come, follow”
“no, don’t”

tired as I am I can feel my mind
straining quietly to hold your hand
so you don’t slip away, forgotten

why does the waking world
make it so hard
for us?

My old friend Bill MacMillan, an artist and incredible poet from up in New England, just put this up on his blog and I have to give him credit for today’s post. I don’t really want to say anything more other than that I think all concerned, truly American bloggers should simply go to YouTube and put this Keith Olberman clip up on their blog. I want this only to be the biggest common topic in all of blogdom today, that’s all. Please take just a few minutes out of your life today to watch and listen to this clip. Watch even if you don’t follow politics or watch MSNBC or CNN or any other broadcast on TV about this country and politics. Watch it because you are alive and have a heart.

Let’s help spread the word!

Well…..it’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that not only am I on a poetry slam team again but that we’re really going to Texas in August and that I’m into all this again. My whole poetry life has ramped up once again and I’m finding myself inspired once more to listen to my muse and create….

This team, the 2K7 Delawhere? Open Mic and Slam Team, is fantastic. I’m very proud to be sharing this honor with Matt and Hannah and Nigel and Sherod. What a crew! Hard to describe this bunch – but that’s probably the best, right? Variety is the spice of life.

If you are in Delaware tonight, particularly in the Wilmington area, you really should stop on over to the Crimson Moon for tonight’s open mic poetry reading: we need you! Come and listen to crazy poets blither away in the comfortable, air-conditioned hip surroundings with a cold one in your hand! All the cool kids are doing it!

Hey, whats up, world—

I’m at the lovely home of Matt and Hannah and Nigel (and Sherrod just arrived) about to have our first team practice for the National Poetry Slam in August….

…I feel like I’m standing on the edge of a diving board looking down,

towards the deep end of some pool down there I can’t quite see…

*and with a loud “sproi-oing!” Rich’s feetz leave the board*

….whoopee!

So, I’m in a cafe with wi/Fi web access and I’m writing this blog entry using the Nintendo DS’ handwriting recognition tool that comes with the new Opera web browser.

Okay, what I like so far is that the loading times aren’t as long as I’d heard – more later as I get used to it…

Stevie Wonder Is My Chauffeur

wow…..so much has been happening that I’ve been having a time getting to this blog! but no more, I need to keep this (and me!) all regular-like, so, herewith, a few updates, and then some opinions:

1. So, I went in today for my orientation on my new sales job selling (common, large and expensive items found in most homes) with COMPANY X. There was a lot less swearing-in than I expected, but there was plenty of paperwork. Good thing I’m good at my own signature! But seriously, this job has some promise to it and I’m looking forward to learning a new skill for once in my slacker-ass life.

2. Last night was the Finals night competition to decide who was going to be on the Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team competing at the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Tx in August. Guess who made it on the team! I’m going to Austin to read my ridiculous poetry! I miss Austin! And I don’t even care about the heat! Now, here’s one catch – the flight. If anyone wants to donate to a really good cause, I could use a little (ahem) help on the cost of a round-trip plane ticket to Austin, Texas in August. Also, do they allow you to take your Nintendo DS on an airplane? Or do they freak out on you at check-in? Does anyone know?

coupla oponions for you to taste (and respond to)

1. Does this assclown need to get smacked in the head or what? “I don’t care about anyone else BECAUSE I’M A YOUNG LAWYER AND MY LIFE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING GOING so I’m gonna take these flights and anyone else who gets TB can just go pound sand, etc, etc, etc,…” Seriously, what the f^ck is wrong with people?

2. This guy’s Lego habit is both cool and funny. But his last name is not! Goddamnit, but his last name makes me so angry! Dammit! ai;ortfhiajwerhkjhaergkjerkjgaekhghjkaert!

3. There are people who drag race up and down a road around here called Elkton Road. They are public nuisances and a short while ago they killed and innocent woman by their arrogant pastime. And now I read that a Tennessee jury is going to let off these two shitfucks after their drag racing killed an innocent girl? No, Tennessee jury, I AM NOT GOING TO ALLOW YOU TO DO THIS. Hang those two. NOW.

Have at it.

Let’s hear what you have to say.

I posted last night that I was nervous about this morning’s second interview for the sales job. I apparently needn’t have been so nervous.

So, that’s good.
