I really hope that you all can make it to the POETRY SLAM that’s happening this Wednesday night, at 8 pm, at the
Crimson Moon Tavern (located at 6th & Union Streets) in Wilmington, Delaware! This slam promises to be a knock-down, drag-out, bloody verbal battle for the top of the poetic heap! I know that I plan on competing, and I plan on putting up a good fight and making the other poets WORK for their victory, and, also, a little “birdie” told me that there will be a couple of BRAND NEW FACES coming out to the slam to TEST THEIR METTLE! What else would you be doing on a Wednesday night? Watching TV? Clipping your toenails?
Where and when and how does all of this happen, you ask?
Here ya go:

Britney Spears Gives Congressman Ike Skelton A Milf Bronsky; WWE Superstar John Cena Puts Gen. David Petraeus Up In The F5

I hope that I’m getting this word out with enough time for some of you to show up for this, but there is going to be a great poetry show happening at the reading this Wednesday night. Amazing poet Talaam Acey will be giving us a powerhouse feature set of poetry that night, and if you’re in the area on Wednesday night, and you’re looking for something cool to do, then this is where you need to be! Here is a little bit about Talaam: He may be the hardest working spoken word artist of his generation. He’s published a novel, a comprehensive collection of poems, an award winning memoir and 9 spoken word CDs. Taalam has been a full time traveling poet since 1999. Tens of thousands of people own his work and many, many more have seen his performances. Acey performs regularly in more than 50 cities in the US and abroad. On average, he is on a plane once every 3.5 days. That’s 100 flights per year to promote spoken word. So, what I’m saying is, please come. You will not regret it. It’s only a couple of bucks, less than half the price of a national brand pack of cigarettes, less than the cost of one day pass on the bus – be there or be square!
In other news, I watched MTV’s Video Music Awards show* the other night with some friends. Here are some notes that I took:
1. If rhythm-and-blues and dance-oriented music have degenerated to the point where the lip-synching morons I saw are being called “artists”, then I fear for the future of music. I heard a lot of stuff onstage, but I didn’t hear many songs, or music. That much I do know.
2. I read a bunch of crap online today about how Britney Spears did not “look good’ on stage and that she had a “mushy tummy”. Wrong! While it’s true that Britney Spears is irrelevant to actual music, to say that she didn’t look good? I liked her little belly showing up, but then again, I’m not brainwashed into thinking that the stick figures who grace fashion magazine covers are realistic depictions of actual human female beauty.
3. I have a huge, pointless and futile celebrity crush on Sarah Silverman. And her microphone time right after Britney’s performance was the best moment of an otherwise lackluster funeral for music.
In other news, if you’re not a comic books reader, fan, or if you’ve never been one, you might not know who that is in the picture at the top of this post. It’s Iron Man. He’s coming to theaters next summer, and he’s awesome. You need to check out this trailer. ASAP.

Poem Draft: The Light of Awakening

as my eyes collect the light of a.m. awakening
slowly, with a coffee cup brewing
the last thing I was dreaming of
fights to not dissolve away
it was you
sweet girl
it was you
with a tease
and a fuschia bikini
and the words
“come, follow”
“no, don’t”
tired as I am I can feel my mind
straining quietly to hold your hand
so you don’t slip away, forgotten
why does the waking world
make it so hard
for us?

So it’s a little bit after 3 in the afternoon on my day off from work and I’m thinking about the poetry reading from last night and what, if anything at all, I as one person can do to bring more people to the event. Not that I didn’t have a good time last night – I always do when I go there, but this reading and slam could be so much bigger, so much more important to the community as a whole. That’s my dream. I keep dreaming about it. Even when my eyes are open. Which isn’t too often. We had an almost so-so turnout last night but we made the best of it and we all had a good time. I should thank the guys from Commercialized for coming down to tape some of the show last night, along with the interviews. That was a very cool surprise. I just wish they came to a packed house. So, how do we fill up this room? How do we bring poets from all over Delaware into this house? We’re ideally situated. Right in the middle of a cool part of Wilmington with parking, a bar and air conditioning. I want this place to be filled with young poets, old poets, page poets, stage poets, feminist poets, teknist poets – I want it all up in here.
This reading could be that loud crack of thunder that silences the whole party on the back porch on a summer night and makes everyone think about their safety for a moment.
Help me figure out a way to make this reading become what it can become.
I’m open to suggestions.
Poetry: Tonight it’s all going to go down on Union Street in Wilmington, baby

Tonight is the Delawhere? Open Mic & Slam at the Crimson Moon Tavern in Wilmington. Please come and check it out. It’s only $2 at the door, with a minimum purchase of $5. That’s a grand total of seven dollars. For the cost of a Sunday newspaper and a pack of cigarettes (two things that you will throw away when you’re finished with them and forget all about) you can check out the poetry of any number of amazing poets from all over Delaware (and Philly too!) Slam poets from Newark and Wilmington will converge on this spot and have a nice little World War of Words. Dreamstreets poets from the vaunted halls of Delaware’s storied poetic history come on any given night to lend their voices to the chorus. Newcomers to the craft, we always need you! Long-time stage pros slicking up the mic with their explosive, comedic and intense deliveries. Have a beer and a sandwich and watch the sparks fly. Check out a girl. Check out a guy. Socialize and listen to riveting “verbage“. Break out that poem you have about the underwear you happen to have on at the time. Break out that poem you have about that secret crush you have on the Pope. Break out that poem you have about how much you want to crush the Pope’s head. Seriously. How else could you spend that little and have that much to carry away after?
I mean, c’mon. For goddamn seriously: can we really allow Delaware’s politics take center stage all the time? Can we really afford to do that, in a time when legislation is getting all the press and poets are getting close to none? How can we allow Paris Hilton and House Bill 177 to get so much attention when there are poets pouring their hearts out and getting 10’s and 3’s on a Wilmington slam poetry stage?!
And finally, let me say a thank-you to my friend Fran for hipping me to this awesome clip on YouTube:

Well…..it’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that not only am I on a poetry slam team again but that we’re really going to Texas in August and that I’m into all this again. My whole poetry life has ramped up once again and I’m finding myself inspired once more to listen to my muse and create….
This team, the 2K7 Delawhere? Open Mic and Slam Team, is fantastic. I’m very proud to be sharing this honor with Matt and Hannah and Nigel and Sherod. What a crew! Hard to describe this bunch – but that’s probably the best, right? Variety is the spice of life.
If you are in Delaware tonight, particularly in the Wilmington area, you really should stop on over to the Crimson Moon for tonight’s open mic poetry reading: we need you! Come and listen to crazy poets blither away in the comfortable, air-conditioned hip surroundings with a cold one in your hand! All the cool kids are doing it!
