Britney Spears’ Father Invalidates Obama’s Superdelegate Baby Car Wash | Poetry At The Blue Dragon in Albuquerque, New Mexico

So Brooke and I went to the newly-reopened Blue Dragon last night for their [re]inaugural poetry reading. I understand on very good authority that the Blue Dragon was a great venue and a wonderful home for performers of all kinds in this city. I really like the place. It’s a little place, very charming on the outside, and on the inside, where the performances happen, is a great, great room. Great stage positioning and sound. Mr. Ken Gurney hosted a two-hour poetry open mic and I heard a lot of very good work from quite a number of new faces. I’d say at the height of attendance throughout the night there were close to 20 people there. In the first hour, I read “Quite Contrary” (my IWPS one-minute poem, the one about answering the random call at the payhone? have you heard me do it?) and ”Maiden Forms“, and, in the second hour, I read “Paramecium” and then I debuted a new poem, a parody/commentary on the deluge of new drug/pharmaceutical commercials called ”Maybe It’s Time“. The crowd, which seemed predominantly “non-slam” in its bent (I heard one woman remark after someone brought up poetry slams that “they have medications for that”), seemed to like my work. I can’t wait for the next poetry event due at the Dragon: the poetry slam. I think it’s going to be very cool.
FCC Okays Nudity On TV If It’s Alyson Hannigan | Delaware Poet Turns into New Mexican Poet, Clouds Rain Fruit Loops on Obama

The city is so beautiful; at some point I’m going to take a bunch of pictures of all the amazing sights that I have seen thus far and post them up on here so all my Delaware and Massachusetts friends and family can see how it is out here. The job search is going slowly, but both surely and well. I’m being very diligent and treating this job search (in a manner of speaking) like the job that I have now. But I’ve had interviews already and will get more. The poetry scene out here is wild. I went to a poetry slam (IWPS format!) at a place called Blackbird’s Buvette in downtown Albuquerque last night and had a blast. I didn’t advance very far (thanks in part to drawing a “1″ in the lots), but that’s okay. Last night was like a lot of slams out here – fantastic and very high quality. There’s some wonderful competition out here. So far, since I’ve got here, I have competed in three slams, all of which were qualifiers to get into the semifinals competition to make the 2008 Albuquerque Poetry Slam Team. I placed third overall in the first slam I competed in (at Mas Poetry, at Winning Coffee by UNM), getting 5 points there. Then I won (!) a slam at a place called Out Ch’Yonda in the Barelas part of ABQ, getting 20 points there. Then there’s the 1 point I earned last night from just having competed in the slam. So, I’ve got 26 points total. The points are not the point. Green chiles are the point.
Also, I found this video clip on the Onion online today and I had to share it.
And yes, I agree with the FCC spokesman’s premise.*

Christy, take off your robe.

I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don’t you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don’t just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite…..”
After being called a “good boy” by a customer earlier today, I’m feeling psychotic.
Maybe even murderous.

Definitely feeling American.
So I have some ideas for Nintendo…

and here’s one:
a video game (for the Nintendo DS) where you take the role of a first person toucher. Many popular video games put you into the vantage point of the First Person Shooter, where you never see more of yourself than your own hand, and you shoot your machine gun at people, and, at things. In my game, you go around touching things (and people, and, parts of people) until time runs out. Or, until the cops come to get you. Or, until someone big enough and angry enough punches you out. You score points every time you touch something or someone you are not supposed to touch. The in-game view would be very similar to games in the FPS genre, except that you won’t be holding a gun in your hand. You’ll simply have your bare hand, and you can go up to random people, places and things and just touch stuff to find out what you are and are not supposed to be touching. Go up to a Dunkin’ Donuts, in the game, and go behind the counter and start touching the tops of all the donuts on the rack until they guy (or girl) behind the counter starts to scream at you. Go up and start touching people. Women’s chests, men’s bums, just see how far you go.
Mind you, this is just a rough draft of an idea at this point.

I was touched to read of the grief that Dr. Irene Pepperberg, the scientist who had worked with Alex for so long, was going through. If you want to take some time to read a few articles that may just stop you in your everyday tracks and possibly even change the way that you look at the natural world, please take some moments and look here, here, here, and then here. And that last link, the one that takes you to the NPR article on Alex, has a sound clip so you can hear Alex and Dr. Pepperberg.

Your story touched me, Alex.

An old woman stopped me on my way to my desk this morning, before I could get myself really “ready” to talk with my first potential customer of the day, and told me that she needed me to help her select a “good and cheap” microwave. I walked along with her to the microwaves.
And then, the second sentence out of her mouth was, “I don’t need it to do a lot ’cause I’ll be dead in five years.”
Poetry: Tonight at the Crimson Moon!

Well…..it’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that not only am I on a poetry slam team again but that we’re really going to Texas in August and that I’m into all this again. My whole poetry life has ramped up once again and I’m finding myself inspired once more to listen to my muse and create….
This team, the 2K7 Delawhere? Open Mic and Slam Team, is fantastic. I’m very proud to be sharing this honor with Matt and Hannah and Nigel and Sherod. What a crew! Hard to describe this bunch – but that’s probably the best, right? Variety is the spice of life.
If you are in Delaware tonight, particularly in the Wilmington area, you really should stop on over to the Crimson Moon for tonight’s open mic poetry reading: we need you! Come and listen to crazy poets blither away in the comfortable, air-conditioned hip surroundings with a cold one in your hand! All the cool kids are doing it!
Stevie Wonder Is My Chauffeur
June 1, 2007 at 3:30 am | In Announcements, Blogging, Culture, Delaware, Life, Life in General, Literature, Living, My Life, Newark, Delaware, Opinion, Poems, Poetry, Rambling, Slam Poetry, Spoken Word | 1 Commentwow…..so much has been happening that I’ve been having a time getting to this blog! but no more, I need to keep this (and me!) all regular-like, so, herewith, a few updates, and then some opinions:
1. So, I went in today for my orientation on my new sales job selling (common, large and expensive items found in most homes) with COMPANY X. There was a lot less swearing-in than I expected, but there was plenty of paperwork. Good thing I’m good at my own signature! But seriously, this job has some promise to it and I’m looking forward to learning a new skill for once in my slacker-ass life.
2. Last night was the Finals night competition to decide who was going to be on the Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team competing at the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Tx in August. Guess who made it on the team! I’m going to Austin to read my ridiculous poetry! I miss Austin! And I don’t even care about the heat! Now, here’s one catch – the flight. If anyone wants to donate to a really good cause, I could use a little (ahem) help on the cost of a round-trip plane ticket to Austin, Texas in August. Also, do they allow you to take your Nintendo DS on an airplane? Or do they freak out on you at check-in? Does anyone know?
coupla oponions for you to taste (and respond to)
1. Does this assclown need to get smacked in the head or what? “I don’t care about anyone else BECAUSE I’M A YOUNG LAWYER AND MY LIFE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING GOING so I’m gonna take these flights and anyone else who gets TB can just go pound sand, etc, etc, etc,…” Seriously, what the f^ck is wrong with people?
2. This guy’s Lego habit is both cool and funny. But his last name is not! Goddamnit, but his last name makes me so angry! Dammit! ai;ortfhiajwerhkjhaergkjerkjgaekhghjkaert!
3. There are people who drag race up and down a road around here called Elkton Road. They are public nuisances and a short while ago they killed and innocent woman by their arrogant pastime. And now I read that a Tennessee jury is going to let off these two shitfucks after their drag racing killed an innocent girl? No, Tennessee jury, I AM NOT GOING TO ALLOW YOU TO DO THIS. Hang those two. NOW.
Have at it.
Let’s hear what you have to say.

So, that’s good.
