Well, this is the post that I did not imagine that I would compose on here for a long time.

Fool that I am, I’m hoping that folks can get out to the Crimson Moon this coming Wednesday, the 6th of February.

I’m going to be moving away, and I’d like to see people before I go. I’m going to try to hit the stage
for the open mic on the night of the Klute’s feature at the reading, so please come, if you can! The Klute, of course, is certainly reason enough to get your behinds off the couch and come out for a night of poetry, drink, and comraderie – but, come also so that I can see you before I go.

I don’t know when I’ll be back again.

8 pm (doors open at 7:00) at The Crimson Moon

I really hope that you all can make it to the POETRY SLAM that’s happening this Wednesday night, at 8 pm, at the
Crimson Moon Tavern (located at 6th & Union Streets) in Wilmington, Delaware! This slam promises to be a knock-down, drag-out, bloody verbal battle for the top of the poetic heap! I know that I plan on competing, and I plan on putting up a good fight and making the other poets WORK for their victory, and, also, a little “birdie” told me that there will be a couple of BRAND NEW FACES coming out to the slam to TEST THEIR METTLE! What else would you be doing on a Wednesday night? Watching TV? Clipping your toenails?

Where and when and how does all of this happen, you ask?

So, I’m a little bit tired. I just got in from work and I had a busy day selling appliances and also not selling appliances. Which is to say, I was busy selling appliances to people who didn’t talk to me that much, and I was also busy not selling appliances to people who were talking my ear off. So, you know, that was some kind of special fun right there.

Last night, the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team had its first set of distraction drills. I cut off some of my hair to make Matt lose his place in the poem. Hannah shook her medicinal tits at me. Nigel said wildly inappropriate stuff to Sherod, who told Hannah to have the fucking baby, already.

This is what real poetry is all about!

Officially? I’m tired and ready to drink a little bit of Scotch tonight and have a cigar.

Poet Against the War (Dissent IS Patriotic, Part 2)

Okay, so it’s not the late morning, it’s the early afternoon, but I had a late night. Sorry. As I mentioned in my previous post, I finally got a response by email from Christy Everson. Here’s the email that I sent to her:

Dear Christy,

My name is Rich Boucher and I’m a poet and patriotic American from the state of Delaware.
I was just reading a news article online at wwww.michaelmoore.com regarding a recent incident
where a young patriot named Rain Burroughs was removed from a 4th of July celebration
at Dogwood Dell area of Byrd Park by Richmond Police simply because she was carrying
a banner which conveyed the depth of her feelings about Vice President Dick Cheney
and, in reference to him, House Resolution 333.

According to the article, which appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, in reference to
Rain Burroughs’ protected political speech, you were quoted as saying, “Obviously, you don’t
want that kind of disruption in the middle of a performance at that location”.

I have some questions for you about what you said, and also about what happened to Rain
Burroughs and her 7-year-old daughter.

1. Why is it “obvious” that political expression would be unwanted at a 4th of July celebration?
Wouldn’t a 4th of July celebration be the most appropriate place of all to celebrate
one’s First Amendment right to openly criticize our government?

2. Who is the “you” in this sentence, “Obviously, you don’t
want that kind of disruption in the middle of a performance at that location”?
Can you actually mean to speak for everyone who comes to a public event?
How would you be able to know such a thing? Do you, as a public official,
believe in and support the First Amendment right to openly criticize our government?

3. Does it make any sense at all to throw a young woman and her 7-year-old daughter
into a police cruiser and keep them away from a 4th of July celebration simply
because they wanted to share their feelings about the current administration’s
policies?

4. You said that you were “unsure” of who called the police to ask for Rain Burroughs’
removal – does this mean it was an anonymous phone call? If it was not an
anonymous phone call, what is the name of the individual who called the police
and asked for Rain Burroughs’ removal from the park?

I know that you are very busy, and I want to thank you, in advance,
for your prompt reply.

Yours sincerely,

Rich Boucher
poet and patriot

And now, here is her email response to me:
Mr. Boucher,

Ms. Rain’s protest created a disturbance during the performance, which is why the police were called. To me it seems obvious that if this had happened in a concert hall, the response would have been the same. I consider her behavior rude not only to the audience who were there to enjoy the evening, but also to the performers. The appropriate place for her to protest would have been outside the amphitheater, where it is my understanding that she was allowed to continue her protests.

Thank you for your concerns for our First Amendment rights.

Sincerely,

Christy Everson

So, she emailed me in response, but she really didn’t answer my questions. And Christy, Rain Burroughs’ protest didn’t happen in a concert hall, so that’s a weird comparison to be making. And who in the hell is Christy Everson to be making the determination as to where it would be “appropriate” to protest? She basically ignores questions 2-4 from my email. This woman just reeks of condescension (“I consider her behavior rude”, “Thank you for your concerns for our First Amendment rights”)! And I do not accept the concert hall comparison – it just doesn’t wash. And there is no “inappropriate” place to engage in political speech when we are in the middle of a fucked-up, badly-conceived quagmire of a war!

So, please help. Drop her an email. Or give her a call.

Let’s turn the heat up.

There seemed to be quite a few hits up on here after my last post (Poets Against The War), and I’m hoping that’s a good thing. I’m hoping that others have emailed Ms. Everson about what happened and I’m hoping that my humble little post made some kind of a difference. In partially related news, I believe that I have become obsessed with checking out my blog stats and tag surfer just to see how things progress and how my posting pattern (every other day, at least) affects ARS. WordPress, you have cool features, man.

In family news, I called my father to wish him a happy birthday the other day. He sounded well. Tired, but well. My sisters took him out to dinner and I wish I could have been there. I miss my family. I love you, Dad.

In performance poetry news, I’ve just learned that the NPS draw is up and posted. So, now I can see that the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team will face these cities (Oakland, Amarillo, White Plains, Charlotte) in our first preliminary bout and these cities (Decatur, Springfield, Atlanta, Houston) in our second preliminary bout. Time to do a little investigation. Time to do a little fact-finding and snooping. Time to do a little of this, and a little of that. * rubs hands together *

Tonight the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team heads down to Baltimore for a scrimmage match against the 2007 DC/Baltimore Poetry Slam Team. We’ll be battling it out against not only DC/Balt., but against a third, pickup-team of poets on hand to make it a Triple-Threat Team Slam. This is going to be good. And it could be bloody, too. It could be bloody good. One of the many reasons that I am excited about tonight is the fact that one of the members of the 2007 DC/Baltimore Slam Team is Twain Dooley, my old teammate and friend from when I was on the 2001 DC Poetry Slam Team!

I have a feeling that tonight is going to get crazy.

If any of my readers (any one reading this blog and into poetry and in the DelMarVa area, really) happens to be in good old Bal’mer tonight looking for something to do, or if you’re up for meeting up to say hello even, here’s where I (and the rest of my Delaware Team) will be:

I want to be an important part of the machinery of this Team. We’re practicing today. And I don’t want to get my fingers caught.

We’re also going to be taken some group photos today. This should be fun.
