Fool that I am, I’m hoping that folks can get out to the Crimson Moon this coming Wednesday, the 6th of February.
I’m going to be moving away, and I’d like to see people before I go. I’m going to try to hit the stage
for the open mic on the night of the Klute’s feature at the reading, so please come, if you can! The Klute, of course, is certainly reason enough to get your behinds off the couch and come out for a night of poetry, drink, and comraderie – but, come also so that I can see you before I go.
I don’t know when I’ll be back again.

So, the time is now 7:25 pm and I’m hanging out over at the home of my friends/slam teammates Matt, Hannah, and Nigel. We’re driving down to the Baltimore Airport at 2 am to fly off to Texas for the 2007 National Poetry Slam. I’m nervous, thoughtful, excited, fearful, happy, pensive, tired, hungry, and ready. This will be my first flight since my return flight to Delaware (which was in late August of ‘01).
I can’t wait to see old friends. I can’t wait to make new friends.
And to hear some tremendous poetry and have a good time in the best place to be in the state of Texas.
“…that’s just turbulence, dear, nothing to worry about….”

Here is what I sent:
A member of 3 poetry slam teams (Worcester ‘95 and ‘96, Washington, D.C. in 2001), this is Rich’s fourth trip to the National Poetry Slam. Rich has published some books of poetry and for 7 years hosted an open reading & slam in Newark, Delaware. He has a lot to learn. His page influences include James Tate, Charles Simic, and Wallace Stevens. His stage influences include Bill MacMillan, Sean Shea, and Lea Deschenes. His interesting blog, Apocalyptic Rabbit Speaks, can be found here: mannabozo.wordpress.com. The Nintendo Wii has helped him to sii, and now hii is frii.
With things like this, I always wonder (and worry) about how “professional” the bio needs to sound. These are all crazy-ass performance poets, these people, and I like to hope that in some ways I am of them, and that in other ways I am not of them. But I think the bio tells you just enough so that if you read the program you might just find enough in there to pique your interest and maybe you’ll stay in the bar, have another beer, and have a look-see at what this Rich Boucher character has to say when he hits the mic.
In other news, the fundraiser at the Crimson Moon Tavern went very well last night. Thank you so much to Chris Malinowski of The Collingwood and to Gina Degnars of Stygian Veil for coming and performing for the crowd. It was a great, huge crowd and you really missed a helluva time if you weren’t there. Standing room only. In a bar, for poets.

I just got in from work and I had a busy day selling appliances and also not selling appliances. Which is to say, I was busy selling appliances to people who didn’t talk to me that much, and I was also busy not selling appliances to people who were talking my ear off. So, you know, that was some kind of special fun right there.

Last night, the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team had its first set of distraction drills. I cut off some of my hair to make Matt lose his place in the poem. Hannah shook her medicinal tits at me. Nigel said wildly inappropriate stuff to Sherod, who told Hannah to have the fucking baby, already.
This is what real poetry is all about!
Officially? I’m tired and ready to drink a little bit of Scotch tonight and have a cigar.

I’m hoping that others have emailed Ms. Everson about what happened and I’m hoping that my humble little post made some kind of a difference. In partially related news, I believe that I have become obsessed with checking out my blog stats and tag surfer just to see how things progress and how my posting pattern (every other day, at least) affects ARS. WordPress, you have cool features, man.
In family news, I called my father to wish him a happy birthday the other day. He sounded well. Tired, but well. My sisters took him out to dinner and I wish I could have been there. I miss my family. I love you, Dad.
In performance poetry news, I’ve just learned that the NPS draw is up and posted. So, now I can see that the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team will face these cities (Oakland, Amarillo, White Plains, Charlotte) in our first preliminary bout and these cities (Decatur, Springfield, Atlanta, Houston) in our second preliminary bout. Time to do a little investigation. Time to do a little fact-finding and snooping. Time to do a little of this, and a little of that. * rubs hands together *

So. I’ve got confirmation that we have a local television company coming to film us at the reading for a big profile this Wednesday, July 11th at the Crimson Moon Tavern in Wilmington, Delaware! I’m so excited about this reading that I’m practically ready to lose continence (will keep you all posted). I’ve been hoping for so long that we could catch back some of that momentum we had going a while back, and this is our chance. So, any of you people out there within reach of downtown Wilmington, Delaware who like to read poetry, who like to write poetry, who NEED to read or write poetry, if you like to listen to poetry; PLEASE come. Be a part of the true beginning of a new area in the local culture.
I expect there to be a lot of poets there. I expect there to be a lot of sexy men and women there getting their good time on. And to all of you Delaware bloggers, the ones who read my little corner of TEH INTARWEBS, please come and check it out! Maybe you’re not into poetry so much. Maybe you are. But please, this could be a special night. Please help me make this a special night and come to the reading! Dress your best! We’re gonna be on TV!

I want to be an important part of the machinery of this Team. We’re practicing today. And I don’t want to get my fingers caught.
We’re also going to be taken some group photos today. This should be fun.

So it’s a little bit after 3 in the afternoon on my day off from work and I’m thinking about the poetry reading from last night and what, if anything at all, I as one person can do to bring more people to the event. Not that I didn’t have a good time last night – I always do when I go there, but this reading and slam could be so much bigger, so much more important to the community as a whole. That’s my dream. I keep dreaming about it. Even when my eyes are open. Which isn’t too often. We had an almost so-so turnout last night but we made the best of it and we all had a good time. I should thank the guys from Commercialized for coming down to tape some of the show last night, along with the interviews. That was a very cool surprise. I just wish they came to a packed house. So, how do we fill up this room? How do we bring poets from all over Delaware into this house? We’re ideally situated. Right in the middle of a cool part of Wilmington with parking, a bar and air conditioning. I want this place to be filled with young poets, old poets, page poets, stage poets, feminist poets, teknist poets – I want it all up in here.
This reading could be that loud crack of thunder that silences the whole party on the back porch on a summer night and makes everyone think about their safety for a moment.
Help me figure out a way to make this reading become what it can become.
I’m open to suggestions.
