It’s 5:15 pm on Thursday, February 14th, 2008. It’s Valentine’s Day, and this is going to be my love letter to Delaware. Tonight my friends in the band i, Fanblades are playing at Mojo 13 with my friends in the band, The Collingwood. Things start tonight at 8 pm there….please come, if you can. I’d like to see you.

It’s been a long time for me here in Delaware. Ten years of so much living; I’m going to miss you all.

Please let me say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to every single poet who ever read at the Tuesday Night Poetry Open Mike & Slam, in all of the locations that it has been in over the years. I can barely comprehend the sheer breadth of work that I’ve been so privileged to hear. Thank you to every friend I’ve every made in Delaware, through poetry and through work. So much has happened, so much amazing poetry has been heard over the years. I know that I am forever changed by my experiences here in Delaware, and by everything I’ve seen and heard as a poetry night host. Thank you to all the poets in the “academic” community here in Delaware, thank you Newark Arts Alliance, thank you Soulstice, thank you Crimson Moon, thank you O’Friel’s, thank you to the Second Saturday poets, thank you to the hip-hop poets, the rap poets, the student poets, the older poets, the crazy poets – thank you all. Thank you to my kindred poets in neighboring Baltimore and Philly and New Jersey – much love, my people, much love. My heart is full of love and thanks to all of my friends here in Delaware – a man could not have better friends than you all have been to me. I could name some people, but, if you are a friend of mine, or have been, then you know that and you know that I love you and am grateful for your friendship.

If you can, please come to a going-away-and-good-luck party taking place at the house of Matt & Hannah & Nigel & Sadako tomorrow night, Friday night…. you can email me at rabbitinvasion@gmail.com for details on how to get here if you can make it.

Good luck to you, Delaware. Love and good luck to Delaware poets and to the Delaware Poetry Slam.

May the spirit of a little stone bunny rabbit guide you, and bring a smile to your face.

Well, this is the post that I did not imagine that I would compose on here for a long time.

Fool that I am, I’m hoping that folks can get out to the Crimson Moon this coming Wednesday, the 6th of February.

I’m going to be moving away, and I’d like to see people before I go. I’m going to try to hit the stage
for the open mic on the night of the Klute’s feature at the reading, so please come, if you can! The Klute, of course, is certainly reason enough to get your behinds off the couch and come out for a night of poetry, drink, and comraderie – but, come also so that I can see you before I go.

I don’t know when I’ll be back again.

A Little Anger For You

Okay….first off, anybody who goes into a LIBRARY with their PANTS DOWN AROUND THEIR KNEES LIKE SOME MORON needs to be LINED UP AGAINST THE WALL and shot.  I’m sitting here, at the Bear Public Library, in Bear, Delaware, and I just cannot believe many people here who have no idea how to act in a library.

Want to wear your pants so that people can see your underwear? Die, subhumans.

Let’s begin: Before you go to the library, finish the act of getting yourself dressed. Try to make yourself presentable. Nobody wants to see your “Roca Wear” trash in the library.

Second of all: if you’re a kid/soccer child/high school/junior high school/baby mama, knock it off with the running around. This is a library, not a playground and people are trying to get work done. Get out of here and take your idiot girlfriends with you.

Thirdly: Got a cellphone? Good for you. NOW, SHUT IT THE FUCK OFF. Nobody cares about YOU or the person you’re on the phone with. YOU DON’T MATTER AT ALL. YOU ARE NOTHING AND YOUR CELLPHONE CONVERSATIONS ARE NOTHING. People who don’t know how to conduct themselves at the library ought to be lined up AGAINST THE WALL and shot. The library is not the social club. Go and do your drug deals behind 7/11’s dumpster, like normal trash do.

violin strings hang a man with the deafening song of a sunset,
and an artist goes mad in the study of your rib cage darkening

you’re trying to figure out
how to make this girl an angel

you wonder if you have the colors you will need
and the brushes, and the knives, and the eye

why are you trying to figure out
how to make this girl an angel?

you can’t think; hard to be sure if a little black
mixed in with the blue will be enough

why do you think you have what it takes
to make this girl an angel?

what marriage of darkness and light will,
with the clarity of a dream, show how far into the morning she flies?

who are you to make the dark, pink flesh
emerge from the canvas like blood from a cut?

the iron gates at the base of heaven
are chained shut: no one in, no one out

was it wise to make her try to rise up
into a sky full of rain late at night?

and you gave her mere tatters of white lace, billowing
barely enough to cover her breasts and her sex

you could change the color of her wings
in your creation
but you let them stay gray,
and began to work on the lightning behind her

what is her name,
this angel your brush
has trapped between heaven and earth

and

who do you think you are

Danny Sherrard’s feature at the reading last night was fantastic, engaging, and fun. Those in attendance got to hear some amazing and truly dynamic poetry. Thank you for reading “The Distance”, Danny, and also, thank you for the tequila shot. Those of you who did not come out for this reading? Why on earth did you not do so? You mean to tell me that you actually wanted to miss this opportunity to come see the 2007 Individual Poetry Slam Champion? It was only $2 bucks at the door and all that the house wants you to do is buy ONE DRINK. That’s it. The bare minimum to be considered a patron of the house. Anyone who chose to stay home and watch TV instead is an idiot, let me be clear on that point.

Post your useless excuses right here.

I’ll be waiting. Don’t make me start losing faith in things, now.

Britney Spears Gives Congressman Ike Skelton A Milf Bronsky; WWE Superstar John Cena Puts Gen. David Petraeus Up In The F5

I hope that I’m getting this word out with enough time for some of you to show up for this, but there is going to be a great poetry show happening at the reading this Wednesday night. Amazing poet Talaam Acey will be giving us a powerhouse feature set of poetry that night, and if you’re in the area on Wednesday night, and you’re looking for something cool to do, then this is where you need to be! Here is a little bit about Talaam: He may be the hardest working spoken word artist of his generation. He’s published a novel, a comprehensive collection of poems, an award winning memoir and 9 spoken word CDs. Taalam has been a full time traveling poet since 1999. Tens of thousands of people own his work and many, many more have seen his performances. Acey performs regularly in more than 50 cities in the US and abroad. On average, he is on a plane once every 3.5 days. That’s 100 flights per year to promote spoken word. So, what I’m saying is, please come. You will not regret it. It’s only a couple of bucks, less than half the price of a national brand pack of cigarettes, less than the cost of one day pass on the bus – be there or be square!

In other news, I watched MTV’s Video Music Awards show* the other night with some friends. Here are some notes that I took:

1. If rhythm-and-blues and dance-oriented music have degenerated to the point where the lip-synching morons I saw are being called “artists”, then I fear for the future of music. I heard a lot of stuff onstage, but I didn’t hear many songs, or music. That much I do know.

2. I read a bunch of crap online today about how Britney Spears did not “look good’ on stage and that she had a “mushy tummy”. Wrong! While it’s true that Britney Spears is irrelevant to actual music, to say that she didn’t look good? I liked her little belly showing up, but then again, I’m not brainwashed into thinking that the stick figures who grace fashion magazine covers are realistic depictions of actual human female beauty.

3. I have a huge, pointless and futile celebrity crush on Sarah Silverman. And her microphone time right after Britney’s performance was the best moment of an otherwise lackluster funeral for music.

In other news, if you’re not a comic books reader, fan, or if you’ve never been one, you might not know who that is in the picture at the top of this post. It’s Iron Man. He’s coming to theaters next summer, and he’s awesome. You need to check out this trailer. ASAP.

I just sent over to the folks at the national poetry slam my new “poet’s bio”. Here is what I sent:

A member of 3 poetry slam teams (Worcester ‘95 and ‘96, Washington, D.C. in 2001), this is Rich’s fourth trip to the National Poetry Slam. Rich has published some books of poetry and for 7 years hosted an open reading & slam in Newark, Delaware. He has a lot to learn. His page influences include James Tate, Charles Simic, and Wallace Stevens. His stage influences include Bill MacMillan, Sean Shea, and Lea Deschenes. His interesting blog, Apocalyptic Rabbit Speaks, can be found here: mannabozo.wordpress.com. The Nintendo Wii has helped him to sii, and now hii is frii.

With things like this, I always wonder (and worry) about how “professional” the bio needs to sound. These are all crazy-ass performance poets, these people, and I like to hope that in some ways I am of them, and that in other ways I am not of them. But I think the bio tells you just enough so that if you read the program you might just find enough in there to pique your interest and maybe you’ll stay in the bar, have another beer, and have a look-see at what this Rich Boucher character has to say when he hits the mic.

In other news, the fundraiser at the Crimson Moon Tavern went very well last night. Thank you so much to Chris Malinowski of The Collingwood and to Gina Degnars of Stygian Veil for coming and performing for the crowd. It was a great, huge crowd and you really missed a helluva time if you weren’t there. Standing room only. In a bar, for poets.

There seemed to be quite a few hits up on here after my last post (Poets Against The War), and I’m hoping that’s a good thing. I’m hoping that others have emailed Ms. Everson about what happened and I’m hoping that my humble little post made some kind of a difference. In partially related news, I believe that I have become obsessed with checking out my blog stats and tag surfer just to see how things progress and how my posting pattern (every other day, at least) affects ARS. WordPress, you have cool features, man.

In family news, I called my father to wish him a happy birthday the other day. He sounded well. Tired, but well. My sisters took him out to dinner and I wish I could have been there. I miss my family. I love you, Dad.

In performance poetry news, I’ve just learned that the NPS draw is up and posted. So, now I can see that the 2007 Wilmington, Delawhere? Poetry Slam Team will face these cities (Oakland, Amarillo, White Plains, Charlotte) in our first preliminary bout and these cities (Decatur, Springfield, Atlanta, Houston) in our second preliminary bout. Time to do a little investigation. Time to do a little fact-finding and snooping. Time to do a little of this, and a little of that. * rubs hands together *
